Ortiz Jr. vs. Lawson fight card

Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Fredrick Lawson; Light middleweight

Ohara Davies vs. Ismael Barroso; Super lightweight

Arnold Barboza Jr. vs. Xolisani Ndongeni; Super lightweight

Raul Curiel vs. Elias Diaz; Welterweight

Emiliano Gandara vs. Isaac Matamoros; Super middleweight

This will be a new period in the career of Ortiz who will be making his bow at junior middleweight after establishing himself as a welterweight. With all 19 of his victories coming within the distance, Ortiz will be hoping to secure a 20th successive stoppage and make a statement to the big names at 154lbs.

One of the hottest prospects in boxing, Vergil Ortiz Jr., returns to the ring to face Fredrick Lawson in a fight that will see the Dallas native compete at super welterweight for the first time in his career.

Ortiz Jr., who holds a perfect record (19-0, 19 KOs), has been inactive since August 2022, when he stopped Michael McKinson in the ninth round to retain the WBO international welterweight crown. Although he was expected to take on Eimantas Stanionis in 2023, he was unable to fight due to health issues.

It will be interesting to see one of the most powerful forces in the sport make his comeback in a new division after such a long layoff. The 25-year-old, though, wants to make a statement when he faces Lawson, as he’s looking to dominate at super welterweight.

The Golden Gloves silver medalist in 2016 will face a dangerous opponent in Lawson, who turned pro in 2011. The Ghanaian will try to pull off an upset and record his most important win as a professional boxer, but he is 3-2 in his last five bouts, which is not a good sign against a talent like Ortiz Jr.

If you’re a fan of boxing, then you might be familiar with Vergil Ortiz Jr., who has a perfect 19 KO record and is a very hot prospect in the boxing world. Unfortunately, his last fight was against Michael McKinson in 2022, with Ortiz Jr. taking all of 2023 off due to health concerns.

As such, this will be his first fight back after such a long hiatus, and in a new division, no less, so it’s certainly going to be an exciting match. Lawson, on the other hand, is the underdog here, with 22 knockouts in his career and a 3-2 in his last few fights, of which he just won his last two, so it should be interesting to see what’s going to happen.

Ortiz, 25, hasn’t fought since Aug. 2022 due to various health issues outside the ring, and is moving up to the 154 lb division for this fight. The show also features an interim WBA title bout at 140, plus returns for Arnold Barboza Jr and prospect Raul Curiel. Barboza is making his Golden Boy debut.

With that said, is it asking too much to have Ortiz Jr fight a junior middleweight? If you’re going to fight at 154, why on earth are you fighting an old welterweight like Lawson? It does not compute!

What’s the point of facing a 147-pounder if you’re now campaigning at 154? By Ortiz Jr fighting a welterweight, he’s delaying the inevitable. If he’s too big to make 154 without draining himself to the point where he gets that health condition again, he needs to move up – again.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. was supposed to challenge WBA secondary welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis last July, but he reportedly fainted while trying to make weight.

Ortiz hasn’t fought since August of last year, as he’s missed a lot of time with COVID and a muscle tissue problem. He had a long case of COVID and knows how that’ll affect him long term. Hopefully, Ortiz Jr. doesn’t drain himself to the point where he passes out or has another reoccurrence of Rhabdomyolysis while getting down in weight for the contest.
